TaxBrain is good for filing service a 1040EZ or a very simple 1040 that will give you a refund. It charges between $14.95 and $69.95 for a federal return and between $19.95 and $29.95 for a state return. The e-filing fee comes with the purchase price.
Navigation is a bit tricky with this system. If you want to make changes to a previous screen, you must first complete what you are working on with the present screen and then go to the section that you want to correct.
Working with Tax Brains will feel working with the paper forms. So it's not the best for beginners. But it will help you decide which form(s) you need. You will just have to type in the figures online.
Tax Brain is an online product. No downloading is necessary. You setup an account for a few minutes and keep your account name and password in a safe place.
TaxBrain offers quick loans for refunds and has archiving options. You can get a bound copy of your taxes for $19.95 or file them in their database for up to five years for $9.95. They also provide audit assistance for $34.95.
TaxBrain gives customer support via chat, email and telephone.

You have to fill out the W-2 sheet instead of answering questions. Many parts of this program do not have an intuitive make-up. To be able to use this program successfully, you should have some knowledge of tax laws, so this is not the best software for first-time filers. One advantage is that it verifies information you type in, so mistakes are minimized.
It is an online program so there is no need to download and install software. Just keep your login info in a safe place and you will be able to sign on in a matter of minutes.
However, this service gives very limited features. You will see a checklist of forms that need to be filled out and you should be able to file tax returns for all of the fifty states.
Even the help section is limited. ExpressTaxRefund only has a FAQs section, a tax guide and tax tools. And even these are not as extensive as a typical tax beginner would probably like. The only means of communication are by mail and telephone.
ExpressTaxRefund charges you with several hidden and unexplained fees. You could end up being charged more than a hundred dollars for less than perfect service compared to other tax softwares.

OLT works well if all you simply have to file your return without much help. It offers a few limited features, like making sure your return is complete, but there are no add-ons like an owe/refund meter, tax tips, and ongoing assistance. OLT is the most basic way to do taxes. A Federal tax return costs $7.95 and a State tax return costs another $7.95.
There are no back or forward buttons to navigate between sections in OLT. In essence, filing with OLT is just like doing your taxes on paper, minus the paper itself. So this is not good for the tax beginner.
OLT is an online product, so you don't have to download or install software. Setting up an account only takes a few minutes. Just make sure you keep your account name and password safe.
A unique feature of e-File is that you can deduct the cost of filing from your refund. This means you don't have to pay anything up front. But OLT does not give tips on how you can minimize your taxes.
It gives 35 pages of searchable tax information and an FAQ section. OLT Online Taxes also gives some phone support, as well as chat and email options.

Tax Slayer Extreme is good option if you want a low-priced software and don't need too much tax advice. It automatically fills in repeated information, files electronically and supports automatic deposit of refunds.
TaxSlayer is well-designed and easy to use. You can quickly jump from one section to another. Menu buttons on the left side of the screen allow you to calculate and print your return, and add multiple state returns.
With TaxSlayer, help is just a click or a short phone call away. There is a Filing Wizard to help you with simple questions.
It takes very little time to start preparing returns. Give basic info, a user name and a password, and you're ready to go.
TaxSlayer's interview process gets information needed on most pages. Most terms are explained in detail. There is a refund/owe meter so you know where you stand with the IRS. Come audit time, TaxSlayer professionals will help deal with the IRS.
A Tax Tips section has advice on tax law changes, claiming dependents, and filing for military personnel. There is a tutorial video to help you with using the site. You can get free email support as well.
